Top-working grafts new varieties onto an established tree to produce a multi-variety tree, or change the variety if the host tree's apples are not wanted or liked. It can also rejuvenate an old tree. You will be shown grafts on trees at the site and practise on suitable branches. If you have saved scions (bud wood) in the fridge since February, they may be suitable to top-work onto your own tree.

cakes. There will be a talk by Liz Copas about West Country Apples discovered in various interesting localities, while our library displays her books. Entries for the cider and juice competition will be on show and winners announced.

Have you been on a restorative pruning course and are at a loss to know what to do with the resulting new growth explosion called water shoots the following summer? Summer pruning aims to help sort out such vigour and bring the tree back into a better looking, safer shape.

A form of grafting that takes place in the summer and gives another opportunity to increase varieties or replacements. Learn how to create new trees by using buds to graft onto rootstocks. Participants will learn the theory and be able to practise on suitable material.
